Does your vehicle have a door ajar warning light and if so does it turn on when you open the door. If the lights are not coming on then its possible the switch has failed. When the interior lights in a car are working correctly they will usually come on when you open your door and then shut off some time after you close the door.

I can turn on the drivers map light by pressing it but then when closing the doors and locking it remains on but not the others so obviously it is in the ON position.
